Larry Cheng of Merits Health Mindful of Returning to Society

Merits Health Products Co., Ltd. was founded by Larry Cheng in July 1986 in Taichung, central Taiwan. Six years later, the company moved to the present location in the Taichung Industrial Park. With the business expansion, Merits established new manufacturing facility in Taichang city, Jiangsu province, China in 1995.

In order to know the dynamics of market and promote their product, Larry Cheng decided to set up a branch office in Florida, USA. Currently, the company has around 300 employees at the China factory, 200 at Taiwan headquarter, and 40 at US office.

The medical products of Merits Health Products Co. Ltd. are divided into four major categories: patient aids, wheelchairs, respiratory products and power mobility. While the patient aid and wheelchair products are made in mainland China, the respiratory and power mobility products are manufactured at its Taiwan factory.

Their medical products are largely exported to the United States, accounting for 75 percent of total shipment, followed by Europe at 20 percent, with the remaining five percent going to Australia, the Middle East and other countries. He said the world economic downturn has had little impact on the medical product industry. As a matter of fact, he added, Merits Health Products Co. Ltd. has registered 10 to 20 percent annual growth over the last several years.

The chief executive officer of Merits Health Products Co., Ltd. Larry Cheng was graduated from National Taiwan University, majoring in mechanical engineering. The rigorous academic training gives Larry solid expertise to drive his team for product excellence and innovation.
“The logo of Merits shows our commitment for customer satisfaction, quality excellence, product innovation, and environmental sustainability” Larry told us. The company is certified by many international standards such as ISO 9001 and 13485.

The CEO said his company has been granted a variety of awards by the government and private sector in recognition of his products’ quality and functionality, including the Excellence Award presented by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), a prestigious trade promoter.

Larry Cheng said he does not aim to fight for No. 1 in the marketplace. “However, it does not mean that my product quality ranks No. 2. I spare no effort in producing the best medical products for my customers all over the world. The many awards I have received speak for themselves,” said Larry Cheng, stressing that customer satisfaction is the top priority he has been pursuing.

Looking into the future, the Merits’ leader has a clear picture in mind. He plans to promote their own brand into the global market. “Although it is not an easy task, we will and are ready to conquer another enterprise summit,” he said confidently.

Public Services

Except for being a successful entrepreneur, Larry Cheng never stops his steps in the public services. His company has donated many wheelchairs to its nearby communities. “That is the way how a company should return their success to the society,” he noted. Besides helping their neighbors, Larry is also concerning about the education of the next generation. “Human resource decides the competitiveness of a corporation. The quality of our school education has profound influence on cultivating our next generation,” he emphasized. As a result, he has contributed several millions to build a sports stadium in an elementary school where he attended. He hopes that the students there would learn more and have a better education through his donation.

Additionally, Larry Cheng is enthusiastic about the feedback to the schools he had ever attended. He was elected as the chairman of the department’s alumni club of his alma mater. He actively participates in all kinds of alumni activities to show his appreciation of the education he had been through. “The career achievement is just half way of success; another half comes from a warm heart to the public,” he stated.
